    What is the age requirement?

    You must be between the ages of 18 and 28 years old.

    Do I need to have a high level of English?

    There is no set English proficiency requirement that individuals must meet. All you need is the ability to communicate effectively in an English-speaking setting. Additionally, your English proficiency will be evaluated during an interview with us. Certain positions, such as food server or front desk roles, may require stronger spoken English skills while other positions do not require such a high level of proficiency.

    Can I apply if I have an existing health condition?

    Your participation in the program will not be affected unless your health condition significantly impairs your ability to perform your daily job duties. It is recommended that you disclose any health conditions during the application process to prevent potential issues later on. While a medical examination is not mandatory for program enrollment, it's important to note that the program's insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions. Therefore, you may need to consult your health insurance provider regarding coverage for any pre-diagnosed conditions.

    Are flight tickets to the United States arranged through Culture X?

    No. Culture X does not engage in any itinerary planning, including flight tickets to the United States.

  • Am I eligible if I have completed my course?

    Unfortunately no. You must be enrolled as a full-time student at the time of application. Final semester students are advised to apply before completing their exams and are encouraged to travel after their final exam rather than after their convocation. Participants must arrive in the United States within 6 months of completing their course.

    Am I eligible if I am finishing my Pre-University Studies?

    Unfortunately no. Even if you're in the process of completing your Form 6 or A-Levels, or awaiting university admission. You must have commenced a 8 full-time diploma/degree program to be eligible. However, you are qualified if you are in the foundation year and there is a natural progression into a degree program provided by the same institution.

    I am an International student studying in Malaysia, can I apply?

    Yes. Acceptance of non-Malaysian students is determined on a case-by-case basis. Factors such as academic performance, the institution where you are enrolled, and the duration of your residence in Malaysia play a crucial role in the acceptance process. However, it's important to note that obtaining a visa is not guaranteed, as the outcome can be unpredictable.

    Will I be eligible to apply for the second time if I have participated in the past?

    Yes. You are qualified to participate if you are currently enrolled as a full-time student and have not yet completed your studies at the time of application. Participation in the program is limited to your official semester break. For graduate students, you must travel from Malaysia to the United States within 6 months after completing your studies at the university.

    Can I apply if my longest semester break is only 2 months?

    Many employers typically favor candidates who can commit to a duration of 3-4 months, although there are also unique opportunities available that last for only 8 weeks. While you are welcome to apply for these positions, actual placement will depend on job availability. Additionally, your semester break must align with the program dates for your application to be considered.

  • Can I find my own job?

    Yes. Obtaining a job prior to applying for a US J-1 Visa in Malaysia is a requirement. However, we strongly discourage students from seeking employment on their own due to significant concerns regarding safety with unfamiliar employers. Additionally, specific employers must be willing to complete a standard form and undergo screening by our sponsor partners in the United States.

    Do I have a choice in selecting my own job or employer?

    Yes. Candidates are advised to apply early for their desired job or employer to increase their options. However, the availability of options will vary depending on the duration and timing of your term break. Summer typically offers the most options. It's recommended that students remain flexible in their job selection.

    Do I only stay in one job?

    Yes. Upon accepting the job offer from the sponsor, you are consenting to adhere to the terms outlined in the agreement. Resigning from your position without valid justification is not permitted, and any changes in employment must be approved by the sponsor. Failure to report to work or departing from the job without notifying the sponsor in advance may result in termination from the program and immediate repatriation.

    Can I work more than one job?

    Yes. Undertaking a second job is permissible provided it complies with the program regulations. Prior approval from your sponsor is necessary before commencing the additional employment. While there are no restrictions on the number of hours you can work, it's important to prioritize your health and avoid overworking yourself.

    Can I be placed in the same job as my friend?

    Yes. You will be required to apply at the same time and often travel on the same date as your friends. We usually limit 3 to 5 students in a group if there are enough positions.

    What will the work schedule be like?

    There isn't a set timetable. During busy periods, you might be required to work up to 40 hours per week (spread across 6 working days with 1 day off), while during shoulder season, you may only need to work 30 hours per week with additional days off. However, the total hours can fluctuate weekly depending on the employer's needs. If additional hours are necessary, it's advisable to proactively request them and be ready to work more during peak periods to compensate for quieter times. It's important to note that working 30 hours per week is considered satisfactory.

    What if I dislike my job or being fired by the employer?

    We consistently advise students to attempt to address employment-related issues directly with their employer initially. However, both our team and the sponsoring partner will provide support to the fullest extent possible in resolving workplace concerns. In the event of termination, it is crucial to promptly seek guidance from the sponsor. If termination occurs without any fault on your part, we encourage you to seek alternative employment in the vicinity, and we will also aid in locating new job opportunities. Departing from your job without authorization will lead to the termination of your program, potentially resulting in immediate repatriation. Termination incidents are highly uncommon, and students are strongly advised to adhere to employers' regulations and conduct themselves responsibly.

    Can I extend my working period while I'm in the US?

    Not often. You are limited to working until the season's close dates, up to 4 months in total.

    What procedures should I follow if I experience an injury or fall ill while working in the United States?

    You will be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits provided by your host employer.

    Before departing for the United States, it is mandatory to acquire a medical insurance policy at a minimal expense. This insurance will provide coverage for any sickness or accidents throughout your program participation. For comprehensive information on insurance coverage, please refer to the insurance policy that you have signed or will be signing during your application process.

    When is the expiration date for my medical insurance?

    The expiration date for your medical insurance is determined by the end date specified on your DS-2019 form.

    If your employer doesn't offer housing, it's your responsibility to arrange accommodation. Unless your employer has made arrangements, you'll need to organize temporary housing at a motel or youth hostel before departing. Many employers offer assistance by providing information. Upon arrival, you can easily find housing by checking local newspapers, community news, and other resources provided by the employer. While you may initially pay more, some students find it advantageous to secure housing that suits both their preferences and budget.

    How do I travel to work everyday?

    The majority of arranged housing is conveniently located within walking distance of your workplace. Some employers also provide daily transportation to and from work if your housing is situated further away. Alternatively, you may choose to rent a bicycle or utilize public transportation for commuting to work.

    What types of food are offered and what are the prices?

    Depending on your location, you'll find a wide range of food options available. If you're employed at a food outlet, you may receive complimentary meals during your shift or discounts on purchases. Some accommodations may include cooking facilities, allowing you to prepare simple meals for yourself. On average, students typically spend between $60 to $130 per week on food expenses.

    Can I use my mobile phone in the US?

    You can use your current mobile phone in the USA as long as you have the roaming service activated. Prepaid mobile network options are also widely available.

    What should I do if I do not encounter anyone to travel with at the end of the trip?

    Travel is a choice within this program, and we do not provide any travel packages. During peak times, it's quite simple to find travel companions. If you prefer solo travel, consider participating in group activities organized by your employer or joining recommended activities from local state travel guides. Travel information is readily accessible online, and major cities are generally easy to access and navigate.

    What is a Social Security Card?

    The Social Security Card holds your Social Security Number (SSN), provided to participants in the USA during the program. The SSN functions as a national identification number for tax and other matters associated with your J-1 program. Having an SSN is necessary for opening a bank account in the USA and depositing your paychecks.

    How do I apply for a Social Security Card?

    The Social Security Card application process takes place after you arrive in the USA and the commencement of your program. Additional details regarding Social Security will be provided during your pre-departure orientation briefing.

    What if my Social Security Card is lost/stolen?

    It's crucial to securely keep your Social Security card and number with you at all times as Social Security Number (SSN) are commonly targeted in identity theft cases. If you discover that your Social Security card is lost or stolen, it's essential to report it immediately to the authorities and your visa sponsor to mitigate any potential risks.

    What transportation options are available for me to get from the airport to my housing or workplace?

    If your employer does not arrange transportation from the airport, it is your responsibility to organize your own method of transportation to reach your housing or workplace. Culture X will coordinate with your host company to establish the most suitable mode of travel to your employer's location, ensuring that you receive this information upon your placement.

  • What is the duration of stay permitted in the United States for travel after my employment concludes?

    After your employment concludes, you are granted a 30-day grace period for domestic travel within the USA. It's essential to depart from the USA before this grace period expires. If you leave the USA during this 30-day grace travel period, re-entry to the USA will not be permitted.

    Am I permitted to leave the United States for travel after my employment ends?

    Yes, you have the freedom to travel to any destination within the United States, including states such as Alaska and Hawaii.

    Am I permitted to go on a cruise trip during my travels after my employment period ends?

    You are permitted to do so. However, it's important to be extra cautious. If the cruise itinerary includes stops in other countries or islands belonging to other countries, you may encounter difficulties re-entering the United States.

    Is my insurance from the program still valid when I’m traveling after my employment period ends?

    Typically, your program insurance covers the duration of your program, including your work start and end dates. During your program, it's advisable to reach out to your visa sponsor to inquire about extending your insurance coverage to include the 30-day grace travel period.   • Am I required to file income tax for the earnings I acquired in the United States?

    Yes, everyone who works in the USA is required to file federal taxes, and potentially state taxes as well, if applicable. Tax filing season typically begins in January of the following year. Rest assured, we will offer further guidance on the tax filing process when the time approaches.

    Am I obligated to pay income tax?

    Typically, our participants are subject to an approximate 10% federal income tax and a minimal percentage of state income tax, if applicable. When you receive your paycheck, your employer already withholds a portion of your 13 salary for tax purposes. As a result, when it is time for you to file your taxes, you may need to pay a little bit of tax or you might be eligible for a refund from the IRS in the United States.

    Am I allowed to engage a tax expert to handle my tax filings?

    Yes. Culture X will provide you with a preferred tax agency to aid our candidates with tax filing annually.

    How much time does it typically take to receive my tax refunds?

    There isn’t a fixed timeframe for tax refunds to be deposited into your bank account. Typically, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
